Ethnic Studies
Ethnic Studies is a dynamic academic discipline and community that provides an understanding
of the history, culture, and contributions of African Americans, Asian Americans,
Latino/a/x Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, and Native Americans. Courses introduce
students to the concepts of race and ethnicity, how race and ethnicity intersect with
other forms of identity, and the role of power and inequality in the United States.
It is an interdisciplinary degree, drawing from the arts, English, history, humanities,
Kumeyaay studies, political science, sociology, and others. Ethnic Studies faculty
foster community and promote civic engagement and social justice through a variety
of panels, presentations, and field trips.
The Ethnic Studies program offers a diverse transfer curriculum and is committed to equity-minded teaching and education for social justice. Ethnic Studies courses focus on the current and historical cultures, contributions, and activism of Black and African Americans, Asian Americans, Latino/a/x Americans, Middle Eastern Americans, and Native Americans. These courses provide students with tools to critically analyze and navigate our current social and political landscape and to examine how past and present events connect to, and are shaped by, themselves and their communities.
